Weigh-in #23: Over 90 Pounds Lost!

by Jess on August 18th, 2010 in Weigh-in

Of course my stuff arrives the day I decided to complain about my scale being MIA. Aside from satisfying my scale addiction, I was also super ecstatic to get and unpack the rest of my stuff.

Meet My Communist Pig

The last time I had an official weigh-in was almost a month ago.

In that time, I realized that too much of a good thing can become a bad thing.

I also moved from California to Washington, DC, and today is my first day of law school orientation!

And I decided that I couldn’t rely solely on intuitive eating because I kept sabotaging my weight loss efforts so I switched back to calorie counting mixed with a good dose of “listen to your body” eating.

But the exciting part, the part you’ve all been waiting for, is that I finally did it.

I reached over 90 pounds lost from my heaviest.

When I started this journey in 2006, I was at 263 pounds. Over the past few years, I’ve yo-yo dieted, going hardcore gym then binging, repeating the process over and over again.

It took me awhile to realize that there are a lot of mental issues that need to be resolved before permanent weight loss and healthy living can happen.

This journey isn’t only a few months long. It isn’t about losing 10 pounds in a month. It isn’t even about losing weight at all. It’s about finding overall health, both mental and physical.

I honestly believe that if you are mentally healthy, your physical health will follow the same path.

Since I moved to DC, I have been walking everywhere. It’s an efficient way to see Washington, DC plus I can save on taxi and metro money.

Last weigh-in weight: 177.0

This week’s weight: 171.0 (down 6.0)

I have never broken past the 175 barrier.
I have never reached 90 pounds total loss before.
I have never been so close to the 160s.
And I have never felt so certain that I can do this.

I am more than just a number though. This journey is not about how much weight I can lose in one year, or how quickly I can reach my goal. It’s not about having an amazing weigh-in every week. It’s not only about the number on the scale.

I am a barefoot-running, half marathoner.
I am a
cook making healthy, delicious food.
I am a work in progress, and I always will be.

This is a lifelong journey, one where I am always improving and bettering myself, each and every day.

I finally did it.

92 pounds lost.

What’s one important lesson you’ve learned on your healthy living journey?

What are your goals for the week?

What’s one thing you want to improve and become better at?

Congrats Jess! you have done such an amazing job!! I love reading your blog – and I’m so impressed that without the scale, and the craziness of moving and exploring your new city you lost SIX POUNDS. You definitely earned it – and even better it cracked a lot of new milestones for you. That’s the best way to earn it! :)

    SO amazing congrats!

I am slowly realizing that I have a lot of mental issues that need to be dealt with also.

So far in my journey, I have realized that I CAN do it/Weight-Loss IS possible. Now I need to focus on consistency. . . I’ve had some deathly low-calorie days because I’m so busy BUT I need to stay fueled and sane – that is my goal especially heading in to the new school semester.

    SO happy for you!

Congratulations!! Inspiring and motivating as always! You give me lots of hope. My goals this week are to keep food logging, ask myself “Am I really hungry?” before I mindlessly snack even within my calorie range, try a body pump class… etc. etc. I have too many goals. lol.

You are such an inspiration to read!
I can relate to you on so many levels, and I completely agree with you. It’s not about losing weight within a time frame, it’s about finally having your head in the right place and knowing you will get there eventually. I have had a slow start, and am only at the beginning of this journey (I lost a lot of weight in highschool, but I’m bigger than I ever was then now, and started a new journey).
My newest goals are getting into exercise, because I forgot how much I LOVED it!

I gave you an award on my blog today!

Keep up the good work, and good luck with law school!

GO JESS!!!!!!!!! You have made so much amazing progress since I checked out of the blogosphere for a couple of months. You’re absolutely right that the real key to permanent weight loss is working through mental issues, and having done that will serve you well as you get closer and closer to your goal weight. All the best with school – be sure to plan time for yourself and your exercise in the midst of the craziness that is a law school schedule!

Congratulations! Amen to this not being about weight, but about choosing a healthy LIFE – body, mind, and soul.

One lesson I’ve learned which echos your post is that none of this, for me, is about food. It’s about emotions, and the layers and reasons and issues behind the food addiction. That only once I’ve tackled THOSE issues can I reach and maintain a healthy weight. That working on the mental/emotional/spiritual stuff will NECESSARILY lead to achieving a healthy weight.

    My goals for the week:

    1. Get in all planned workouts.
    2. Catch up on reading/commenting on blogs.
    3. Gear up mentally for my 5 mile run on Monday.

The thing I want to improve upon right now is my running. That’s my focus for the next month as I train for my 10K. I can’t wait to see where I’m at physically/running-wise when that day comes!

Congrats Jess! That’s an awesome accomplish that you should be very proud about.

Something important I’ve learned through my healthy living journey is to try something new, be it food or exercise.

My goals for this week is to lose 2 pounds since I havent lost weight in over 2 months. I have maintained though.

One thing I want to Improve on is running. I just started running for my first 5k and I LOVE it! I want to run more and more.

Big congrats Jess! That is really exciting, and a major WOOT for busting through your 175 barrier!

I think probably the most important thing I’ve learned along the way so far is just what you said – that this is a lifelong journey. I don’t need to focus so much on the number on the scale (which is why I stopped doing regular weekly weigh-ins on my blog). I need to focus on being healthy and fit, because that’s what’s really important in the end. Yes, getting the number on the scale to go down is important too, but it is not the goal.
