Weigh-in #3

by Jess on February 22nd, 2010 in Goals, Weigh-in

Weight: 213.6 (new scale); 203 (old scale)

Total loss: 10 pounds

Third week resulted in a loss of one pound. Am I discouraged by a one pound loss? Hell no. I ran a 10:42 mile, which is MORE than a whole minute faster than last week. I can lift more, my body is getting stronger, and I can bump up the resistance on the elliptical without becoming terribly out of breath.

I’m trying to view the new scale not as an enemy but as the real truth. An inconvenient one. This just means I’m 13.6 pounds away from being in the 100′s, which means more work. How did I ever let myself get to this point? That’s the disappointing part. But the more I think about it, the more encouraged I get (I know, I’m the opposite of most people). This time around, I am tracking my progress and blogging. I can share my wisdom and knowledge with others, and I can experience more dishes and develop my cooking skills further. I’ve come to understand that weight loss isn’t about dieting but about finding foods you love that also love you back. It’s not about punishing yourself for that extra 100 calories but striving towards a goal.

Since it’s the Olympics, I was thinking how these athletes are such goal-oriented people. Everything they do is for the purpose of working towards that one goal. A weight loser is the same. And I have to keep that goal there. Everything I eat, everything exercise I do, is for that goal. And sure, there will be glitches on the way, but the goal cannot disappear.

For the past three years, every time I lose, I become too confident, and bored of the same five dishes I’d make, that I would just go on a 5 month detour, gain all the weight back, and start the cycle again. This time, I have to continue on. It’s kind of like the hare and the tortoise. I would always be the hare, but in the end, it’s the slow, steady progress that counts.

And hey, ten pounds in three weeks is pretty damn good! Goals for the week were accomplished. Stretching has definitely helped my muscles recover and my fluid intake is on the dot.

Oh yeah. My one GO GREEN suggestion. If you’re drinking lots of water, try not to use plastic bottles. Go buy a liter bottle. Refill and reuse. If you’re going to use plastic bottles, then use one and keep filling it up. Just because things are recycled doesn’t mean there’s no waste that comes from the recycling process. Help yourself and help the Earth too!

Goals for the week:
1. Run a 10:00 minute mile.
2. Do 3 sets of 10 girl push-ups every other day.
3. Weigh myself only on Sunday and Monday!
4. Buy a domain name and set it up.

As much as I enjoy blogger, having a domain will just give me more freedom, especially with design and I want to start writing some movie reviews (yes, Shutter Island, I’m looking at you) as well as some other tidbits. Blogger just doesn’t give me as much control.

And with that, bring it on week 4.

Lots of positive things in the works for you. It sounds like you will be in the 100's pretty darn soon! How wonderful!

Good luck. I have lost lots of weight in my life (usually the same 30 pounds — I take it off, but two years later it has found me again!)

I weigh myself every day. But I really track progress by comparing the same day one week apart. So even if you want to weigh every day (which I know everyone says not to), I found it OK so long as the progress was mentally measured over weeks and not day to day.
