Too Much of a Good Thing is a Bad Thing

by Jess on August 4th, 2010 in Foods, Revelations

Yesterday, I overdosed on chocolate M&Ms.

I love M&Ms.

Especially the peanut butter ones. But I’ll settle for chocolate, almonds, minis, crunchy, pretzels, dark chocolate, and coconut. They are all delicious. (Note: I do not like peanut M&Ms.)

After letting the M&Ms settle, I decided to hit the gym.

Talk about the WORST idea ever.

I ran a mile in 9:40, then hit the elliptical for 30 minutes. During the elliptical, I started getting woozy. I felt like puking. I could feel the sugar rushing to my head, not in a energetic way but in a debilitating manner.

You’re a genius, Jess. M&Ms are NOT running fuel.

I couldn’t call it quits though. I had to make the most out of my expiring gym membership.

I decided to push myself into sprinting. I did 2x400m sprints, both under 2 minutes, but then I really started to feel it. My stomach muscles were cramping up. My legs wanted to give in. My head was throbbing.

And I couldn’t stop burping. (No, not the loud, obnoxious kind.) All I wanted to do was hurl.

Stretching didn’t help. Kneeling over the toilet didn’t help. I only felt a bit better after I drank a liter of water. Maybe that helped dilute all the processed sugar floating around in my blood stream.

Lesson learned.

Too much of a good thing becomes a bad thing.

If you drink too much water…

…you can get hyponatremia and become water intoxicated.

If you take a bubble bath for too long…
…you become wrinkly and your fingers turn pruny.

If you eat too much fiber…
…your stomach starts hating you because you’ll be visiting the bathroom. A lot.

If you run too much…
…you might become injured, get tendonitis, or have a stress fracture.

If you exercise and train too often…
…you won’t have time for the other things in life.

If you have too many bananas in one day…
…you’ll have problems going number two.

If you consume too many beans…
…you become very gassy and you start farting way too often.

If you scuba dive too many times in one day…
…you’ll get nitrogen poisoning and suffer from decompression sickness.

If you eat too much pineapple in one sitting…
…the roof of your mouth will feel like it got stripped down by sandpaper.

Note to self: M&Ms are not fuel. Do not treat them as such.

What have you eaten that has made you feel like crap?

What is the worst food to eat before you exercise?

What have you done too much of that it ended up becoming a detrimental thing?

    Fiber One Bars.

    Not bar … BARS.

    Like, 3 or 4.

In a timespan of about 2 hours max one morning. (I was doing WW — they’re yummy and low in points.)

They have been banished from my house by Tom as the sound released from my body while I slept later that evening was enough to wake our son up …. TWO ROOMS OVER!

I think sugar is what I used to overdo it on a lot. I can’t think of anything I have overdone recently. I also can relate to overdoing it on the working out. I trained for a fitness competition and I had to train so much I felt the rest of my life slipping away. Along with my love for the gym. Not cool!

And so glad I found your blog through #fitblog last night! :)

I’ve been overdoing it on internet and Sudoku! We have a mosquito infestation in the area and you can’t step a foot outside without getting attacked. It sucks.

I am laughing so hard, I am so amused. This is a brilliant post!

And I do that crap all the time, eat french fries and head to the gym thinking I’ll burn it off. It only makes me feel disgusting.

    PS — pretzel M&Ms:)

Been there done that, only once though. I overdosed on candy one time, and I had the bright idea to go the gym and KILL myself there to work off all the crap that I ate. Bad idea, as I ended up sick. Haven’t done that since. Now, if I could just learn that overeating does the same thing to me….

Lol at the rest of your “If you this..”

If I run in the mornings, I can’t eat anything before hand. I drink 16oz or so, pack my shot blox and eat them very slowly starting about 20 minutes in. I have a hard time eating anything in the morning b/c everything smells/makes me nauseated (except coffee). And no, it’s not that. I’ve been that way for at least 15 years. I turn into a ravenous beast after my morning runs, though.

Do you ever watch The Office? If so, did you ever see the one where Michael “carb-loads” with fettucine alfredo before a 5k? It cracks me up remembering that episode. In fact, I chuckle about it every time I think of carb-loading before a longer training run.

I overdo it on donuts about once every 6 weeks (when we have Donut Day at work), but actually, the last couple Donut Days haven’t been out of control.

I once went to heated yoga (Bikram) hung over and vomited during the class in the restroom. I was so embarrassed (no doors, just curtains, btw restroom and front desk) and figured the staff would think better of me if they knew I was a vegetarian and I told them I thought somehow there had been bacon in something I ate by mistake. My friend said there was no way they bought that story b/c the stench of vodka was pouring off me with my sweat… And I’ve never been back since — even though I’m sure they wouldn’t remember me years later!

I can’t believe you don’t like peanut M&Ms! I think those are tied with peanut butter for my fave kind.

I guess the worst thing I’ve indulged in was a few drinks the night before I went to a pole dancing workshop. Being ever so slightly hungoer + doing spins on a pole = NOT GOOD. I did manage to enjoy myself still. Pole dancing is a lot harder than it looks!

Running for sure, speed work to be specific. And on a treadmill, not good place to try out speed work, ouch. Hurt self for months.

For me, all food is a potential binge food, eating disorders do not discriminate bananas from cake unfortunately so for me that’s a bigger issues.

Great post and no more M&M avatar? LOL

I know it sounds totally ridiculous, but my best running experiences have come after eating cake. Or toast and sugary jelly. Not OD’ing on it, but having like one slice. I’m sure there are better ways to fuel a run, but on those days it just sort of happened like that, and having a calorie-dense but physically small meal really helped.
The worst pre-work out “fuel” is night-before-boozin. Even when I really want to get in a good work out, I still can’t get going and I feel like crap the whole time.

If i drink too much coffee, I go insaaane. Also, if I use my laptop too much I get in a funk.

Very clever! Unfortunately, I can overeat just about anything and not feel well after, even something healthy like whole grain bread. Overeating anything makes me feel like crap. Sigh.
