I had originally planned to be in Los Angeles the entire weekend, from Friday until Monday morning, spending quality time with quality people while listening to beautiful music.
I saw a dear friend of mine, my Twin, who I haven’t seen in at least two years. It was just like old times. Great conversation, wonderful insight, heart-warming laughs.
But last night, I realized that I miss the comfort of home.
I don’t have much time left to spend with my parents in San Diego since I’m moving out to Washington, DC on August 10.
The East Coast isn’t new to me.
I spent last August to December there, “enjoying” the humidity of summer, the color-changes of fall, and the blasted snowstorm of winter that left me stranded a few days before Christmas.
But this time, it’s a different, more bittersweet feeling.
I won’t be coming back as often, and when I do, it’ll probably only be for short breaks. When law school starts, it’s time to start growing up.
For some reason, I really missed my bed last night.
I really missed my house.
I really missed home.
So instead of staying in Los Angeles, like I originally had planned, I drove home in the middle of the night. It was tiring. I didn’t get home until 3 in the morning, but it was worth it.
Sleeping in my bed, under the covers, with the wind blowing ever so lightly through an open window, makes me feel comfortable and safe.
I’m glad to be home.
Have you ever missed the comfort of home?
How do you handle being away?

Every once in a while I *still* miss the HOME that is my parents’ house where I grew up. Thankfully they still live there, and it’s only about 3 hours away from where I live. So when I miss it, I make time to take an overnight trip home. I did it recently and it was AWESOME!
Law school is definitely a change in gears, and living on the East coast while going will be even more of a change. I’ll encourage you to do what I did (ever so humble of me, no?) – decide what you want your whole LIFE to look like, and then approach law school that way. For me, I knew I would NEVER be willing to work 7 days/week, 80 hours/week just to make boatloads of money. So I didn’t spend 7 days/week, 80 hours/week in school or studying. I gave law school about 40-50 hours/week, more during finals. I still worked out, I saw friends and family (albeit less than usual) – I treated law school like I would treat a job. It really helped me stay sane and balanced!

Oh Dorothy, it is so true – there is no place like home.
I travel for work a few times a year (and if I’m lucky at least once for fun). Its always nice to go and set out on a adventure and see somewhere new, but I’m ALWAYS very happy to come home. I love where I live!
Being away though is just like the way we live our lives, if you are okay with the space you’re in and are content with where you find yourself it will reflect in how you feel. I think that will be the same with your big move to law school. You will be content with where you find yourself because you worked so hard for it!

I can understand, visiting is nice, but home is the BEST
I was just on vacation for the past week in NC. I was out of my comfort zone, I had to figure out where I could workout, what I could eat and try to relax because I was on vacation. It’s hard going from a routine for almost 4 months to a week of everything is new to you. It was hard, I may have made some poor eating decisions but man was it a good vacation. This week, I am working out hard.
You have a twin?
A super close friend of mine. Her name is also Jessica, so we’re twins
Is it too late to say don’t go to law school? If you must, I think the first comment above is good advice. It’s tempting (and easiest sometimes) to get sucked into a clerkship during 2L summer and then after the bar where you bill 2500 and start at 175, but the opportunity cost for those years and hours of your life is so much higher than you know. The problem is at good schools you just get tracked into those jobs, and then you start the lifestyle and before you know it, 5 years is gone (if you’re lucky, I probably didn’t look up for more like 7 or 8 years). But, I will say that I think a legal education is the best education you can get! It’s just that the practice of law in the 10-15 years has changed and now leaves a lot to be desired! Good luck!!
I am in San Diego now, it’s 30 degrees cooler than Dallas (home) so I don’t miss it yet. But I will be crying for my kiddos by Friday.
