No Weigh-in

by Jess on June 30th, 2010 in Weigh-in

I realize that having a blog makes my progress transparent. Everyone can see it. And it does put some pressure on me to perform on a weekly basis.

But frankly, after my bottomless pit episode, I just don’t want to know my weight this week.

This does not mean I’m throwing in the towel. Far from it.

I went for an hour walk yesterday. I hit up the gym.
I discovered that I can bench press 90 pounds twice.
I tried doing a clapping push-up and almost fell flat on my face.
I’m still drinking tons and tons of water.

But I just don’t want to know my weight this week.

There’s no good that can come from knowing.

If the scale is up, I will convince myself that it’s not real weight gain. It’s most likely a combination of sodium and water retention – my body’s attempt at regaining balance.

If the scale is down, I will convince myself that I could have lost more had I not binged and been lazy. Or, it might have been muscle loss from not lifting as much this week.

Either way, it will just be a negative experience.

So I just don’t want to know this week.

I am taking a week hiatus from the scale. I am more than just a number.

Weigh-in will resume next week, but for now, no scale and no numbers.

Do you weigh yourself weekly? Do you ever feel pressure from having a blog?

Man, I weigh myself like 4 times a day…it’s bad. But yeah, taking a break from it would probably be a good idea. I mean, come on–I think we all know when/if we gain weight, right?

And yeah, there’s totally pressure to perform every day. Let’s face it, people love to see “winners”. But the thing is, winning on this journey is so much more than losign weight.

    Good choice, I’d say, Jess.

I totally do, but I feel like it’s good pressure (for now). Although I weigh myself everyday, except Sundays (because after the weekend, who wants to weigh themselves???)

I totally agree with you though, if you choose to skip a week because no matter what, it’s a lose lose, then that is the right decision! Nobody wants to step on the scale and just know that no matter what happens, you’ll feel like crap.

I applaud the choice Jess, I wish I could have the discipline but you are right. You know you overate, you don’t plan to continue to overeat so whatever you see on the scale will lead to head games with yourself. I weigh in every day but only track once a week, but I like seeing the swings in a week, it makes me realise that a bad number one day is just that a bad number on one day out of the week, it could happen on my official weigh in day or any other day. For me this has actually made me less sensitive to the number on the scale, for some people I’m sure it would make them more sensitive.

I don’t feel anymore pressure to perform than what I naturally put on myself… After all aren’t we our own worst critics much of the time?

I second that emotion, but then again, I gave up weighing completely last year. And yeah, because of that I have often felt a little pressure when it comes to my blog because even though it’s not what I would call a “weight loss blog” it’s about that. I sometimes feel like readers are wondering if I am making any “progress.”

AMEN to being more than just a number. I weigh daily but have gotten so used to the fluctuations of my body that I just use that number as feedback. And I don’t feel pressure to post my weight or to weigh-in because of my blog, thankfully. I hope you don’t feel any pressure from us!

I weigh myself weekly when I’m following my weight loss plan, but I don’t always share it on my blog.

I feel good pressure from having a blog. I hate letting people down, especially those who are so supportive in the weight-loss blogging community.

I weight myself once a day. First thing in the morning, after my first poop, but before I eat anything. If either one of those things has/hasn’t happened by the time I leave the house, then I just don’t weigh myself that day. It does get a little tricky. I don’t always record my weight on my blog, I keep it mostly private. I guess I just want to get out of a certain number for good before I start being like, “Hey! Guess what I just did! I lost 20 lbs!” cause it might be back tomorrow.

And again, I really am just focusing on only eating when I’m hungry, and getting in as much purposeful exercise as possible.

I was weighing myself weekly and will go back to doing so starting next week. I had some blog troubles and am back not only on my blog but on my plan. I feel like the people that read my blog do want to see me each week and see what progress I have made. It’s a lot to handle sometimes but it pushes me in the right direction but not so far that I go back to my old disordered eating habits.

I find that I rebel in a way from having a blog
I weigh once a year at the doctors and the longer I blog the less I get focused on anything other than LIVING LONGER and being a healthy vibrant mama.

    I am a misfit.

I think it’s healthy to realize when ignorance really is bliss. It’s also really healthy to take a break from the scale, because even though we all know the number doesn’t define us… the number kind of defines us when we concentrate on it.

I often weigh myself, but (unlike most people) I don’t put a lot of emphasis on what the scale says. It’s just a habit that I got into back when I DID care if the number was up or down. There are still days, though, that I get on the scale & I just want to cry or swear or throw it out the window. I think on those days, the scale (or my weight) is just something for me to vent whatever frustrations I’m feeling about myself or my life.

I weigh myself twice a day! My blog has helped me stay on track and motivate me when I needed it. The odd time I feel like you said needing to perform but overall it’s been far more worth it then not worth it.

I don’t see anything wrong with you skipping a weigh in. You already know how you’re doing, and what you need to do to continue to be successful. A number on the scale isn’t going to tell you anything you don’t already know.

I do feel extra pressure sometimes because of having a blog. I don’t want to feel like I’m letting anyone down. But that’s also one of the reasons I decided to stop doing regular weekly weigh-ins. I hate the feeling of “oh my gosh, I’ve got my weigh-in in 2 days, I’ve got to do REALLY good today and tomorrow to make up for yesterday”. I guess I kind of felt pressured to keep posting good numbers on weigh-in day.

Having said that, I still weigh myself daily, and use Physics Diet to kind of smooth out the bumps and inconsistencies you get from daily weigh-ins. It’s always a little behind my scale weight, but I think it’s a lot closer to my “true” weight.
