June 21, 2010, happened to be my mom’s Chinese lunar birthday. Her driver’s license birth date was actually a week ago, but because the Chinese (lunisolar) calendar is calculated differently than the Western (Gregorian) calendar, she was able to have two birthdays this year. Party time!

Chinese calendar birthdays land on different Gregorian calendar dates every year. So just because my mom’s Chinese birthday is on June 21 this year doesn’t mean that it will be on June 21 next year.
And you thought remembering birthdays was difficult…
The Chinese calendar has twelve months, but it follows the moon’s cycle instead of the sun’s cycle. In the Gregorian calendar, New Year’s Day is always on January 1. Chinese New Year, on the other hand, changes every year. In 2010, it happened to fall on Valentine’s Day, February 14, but in 2011, it will be on February 3.
Sounds awesome (and slightly complicated), no?
My Gregorian birth date is July 2, 1986. My Chinese birth date is the 26th day of the 5th lunar month in the lunisolar year 1986. My driver’s license birthday will always fall on July 2, but the 26th day of the 5th lunar month of 2010 happens to be on July 7 this year. I get to celebrate twice!
TO CALCULATE YOUR LUNAR BIRTHDAY…
Go to this site and enter your birth date. Click Gregorian Calendar when you’re done.

After you click, a page will come up displaying the Western calendar date with the corresponding Chinese lunar date. You want to look for the lunar month, see if it is a leap month or not, and the day of the month.

Now that you know what lunar month and day you were born on, you can figure out what date that happens to fall on on the Gregorian calendar.
Go to this site to complete your conversion.
Select convert lunar to solar. In the lunar year box, scroll down to 2010. In the month box, enter your lunar month. In the day box, enter your lunar date. Check the little box if you happen to be a leap month baby. For me, my month would be 5 and day would be 26. Hit submit.

After you hit submit, you will see the solar (Gregorian) month and day in 2010 that corresponds with the 2010 lunar month and day.

My Chinese lunar birthday happens to be five days after (July 7) my Gregorian solar birthday (July 2). Cool, huh?
THE CHINESE ZODIAC
I was born in the Year of the Tiger. When I was born, my parents put a gold tiger necklace around my neck to protect me and bring good luck. Apparently, I added some teeth marks to that necklace.
2010 happens to be the Year of the Tiger. According to my mom, this means that big things are supposed to and will happen. I guess they have already!
When I was growing up, my parents told me the Chinese Zodiac story that explained how the animals ended up in the order that they’re in. The unlikely gathering story is the one I’ve been told, with a slight difference. The version that my parents told me had the Jade Emperor inviting all the animals, not Buddha.
TO FIND YOUR ZODIAC SIGN…
Go to this site and enter your Gregorian calendar birthday (your birth certificate date).

I happen to be a Fire Tiger. I think the personality analysis is actually quite accurate.
Tigers love to be challenged and will accept any challenge if it means protecting a loved one or protecting their honor.
They don’t worry about the outcome because they know they’ll always land on their feet.
Expressive, vibrant and a bit eccentric, Fire Tigers are always looking at the positive side of every situation.
NOW YOUR TURN…
When is your Gregorian birthday?
When is your Chinese Lunar birthday?
What day does your Chinese birthday fall on in 2010?
What is your Chinese Zodiac sign?
Is the personality description accurate? Why or why not?

That was fun. =)

What is your Chinese Zodiac sign? The fire snake.
Is the personality description accurate? Why or why not? Some of the description was is accurate, but not much! “intelligence, gracefulness and materialism. When it comes to decision-making, Snakes are extremely analytical and as a result, they don’t jump into situations. They are effective at getting the things they want, even if it means they have to scheme and plot along the way.”
Intelligent, yes. Graceful, hell no. Materialistic, not really. I am not very analytical, and I DO tend to make rash decisions. I do always get what I want though…and I only scheme and plot for good (not evil). It also says that snakes tend to job-hop, and I’ve been at the same job for 12 years.
The description that is “fire snake” specific is painfully accurate:
“Fire Snakes are more extroverted, forever offering opinions and telling others what’s on their minds. Even so, others enjoy listening to Fire Snakes. They’re very persuasive and are especially good at convincing others that their ways are best.”
=)
You and your mom are so cute
! I’m a wood ox. “They do have a tendency to be quick-tempered and outspoken.” That describes me pretty well. I don’t think I’m nearly as stubborn as the description says, but I think my family would say otherwise.
I’m a Leo in the other zodiac stuff. I don’t put a lot of stock in horoscopes, but I’ve always matched the personality descriptions to a tee. And, my two best friends have the SAME birthday, so I’ve always taken that to mean something deep and astrological. lol.
How fun! I love how you show the whole image of your life–not just your training and eating.
So your birthday is coming up, huh? Yay!
Oh, by the way, you’re right, Anna “speaks” Cantonese.
But not well. Ha! Did the character look okay? I “wrote” it myself…
beej´s latest post: Week 63
My solar birthday is eight days after my gregorian birthday. I am a Water Tiger (I was born in 1962)
Water Tigers are sensitive and tranquil. They realize that other people have worthy opinions too. They’re very intuitive which makes them good at accurately judging different situations.
This is definitely me.
This is fun! Thanks for the links Jess!
Party hardy indeedy! Happy birthday X 2 to MOMMA!
I’m actually a snake. I choose not to accept this and pretend I am a lamb. My birthday also falls on a weird day for Zodiacs such that one magazine says I’m scorpio and the other says I’m sagitarrius. By virtue of this, I have never believed either and am perfectly content to ignore the entire reasoning behind these things.
YAY I RULE!
1. CONGRATS ON YOUR MILE TIME!
2. Apparently, both of my birthdays are happening on the same day this year.
I’m a water pig. Some of it seems true and some doesn’t. No different than my Western zodiac sign.
the first part sounds way too hard for me to figure out. i’m a earth horse for the second part. yes its almost exactly like me. They aren’t fond of taking orders and they’ll run from jobs they consider routine – thats exactly why im always complaining about my boring cubicle job. this is me too: They’re also capable of multi-tasking however they don’t always finish what they start because they’re forever chasing the next opportunity. Horses are honest, friendly and open-minded. They’re perhaps a bit too centered on themselves and have been known to throw tantrums when situations don’t go their way. – i’m very self centered (prob why i write a blog lol) and very honest and always multitasking but with my short attention span i get bored easily. happy bdays to your mom.
Hey there! I understand this is sort of off-topic however I needed to ask. Does running a well-established website such as yours take a large amount of work? I’m brand new to blogging however I do write in my journal on a daily basis. I’d like to start a blog so I will be able to share my own experience and views online. Please let me know if you have any recommendations or tips for new aspiring blog owners. Appreciate it!
