Day 93: Heal the Bay 5K

by Jess on May 5th, 2010 in Races

Yesterday, I was notified by the wonderful people from POM Wonderful that I had won a free entry to participate in the Santa Monica Classic 5K which benefits Heal the Bay. Heal the Bay is an organization that helps keep Southern California’s beaches and ocean clean.

POM was raffling away 4 entries to the race. Only another girl and I entered, so I won by default. Who cares?! It saves me $40 registration fees and I get to run a 5K along Ocean Avenue. It’s going to be BEAUTIFUL. And flat. I can’t wait. It’ll give me an excuse to go up to LA to see some friends. It will also be my first race in my Vibrams. I now get a trial run before the 10K on May 22.

COURSE MAP

I don’t know if I will run the 5K for a PR. I might just go out there to soak in the atmosphere. You know, run for fun. But knowing myself, I will probably try to PR.

The time to beat? 33:21

I won’t be training specifically to beat my personal best. If it happens, it happens. If it doesn’t, no big deal. I have bigger things to tackle: the 10K and the Half Marathon on June 6. However, I think a 5K will be really fun. If you had told me last year that my idea of fun would be waking up early on a Sunday morning to run 3.1 miles, I would’ve scoffed at you. Well, not any more. I’m really excited!

Thanks again, POM Wonderful. You continue to surprise me.

And thanks to you for all the positive feedback on The Matrix Guide to Running.

I bet I saw 100 runners in Vibrams during the Warrior Dash. My brother in law ran in them and loved them.

I’ll take a default win any day too!

Looking forward to hearing how you liked the shoes.

Thats an exciting/awesome prize! I hardly ever enter contests because I never win, but your story proves me wrong. And, randomly, maybe I’m just imagining this, but I hardly EVER seen sunday races in the Southeast. Maybe because it is in the bible belt, or maybe because I just haven’t looked as hard, but it seems like all the races are on Saturday (or Friday).
But, anyway, that sounds like a fun/scenic race!!

Yay for free running! Racing can get expensive. POMWonderful, you rock. You are so inspiring Jess. I’ve never done a 10k….but now you have me thinking…I went from 5k to marathon, skipped all distances in between! Maybe that needs added to my goal list, 10k and half marathon.

Yeah you know yourself too well. You’ll be PRing that day. But was the previous in VFF’s? If it wasn’t you could have a PR either way :-)

Sounds like a great way to spend a Sunday morning, if you ask me.
Wish I were by the ocean to enjoy such a great view! I have the beautiful mountains here so I still get a great view. Have fun and enjoy the race!

Yum! The food looks great! I may try to make that one! I might even be able to get the kids to eat one. Hey, thanks for the idea!

Good luck on the race. :)
