Day One

by Jess on February 1st, 2010 in Goals, Month 1 & 2

Most first days are exciting and unpredictable. Day One of my big weight loss project is, well, not so much. I guess you could say that it will be exciting for me to fit back into my 170 pound jeans, but what lies ahead is a long journey filled with hard work and many hours in the gym sweating my ass off with even more hours being sore afterwards.

Why bother? Because I’m very uncomfortable with my body weight at the moment. When I came home in August from backpacking Southeast Asia for seven and a half months, I weighed 180. I vowed to never lose control again. In the five months that I’ve been home I’ve gained 30 pounds. When weight shoots up, self-esteem dives down. It’s a pretty vicious cycle. But I’ve finally had enough (again) so it’s time to get my ass in gear. Did I mention that this weight fluctuation has been an on-going battle for the last 3 years between me and my body? Every spring to summer since 2006, I work out hard, control my eating, and successfully lose weight, only to have winter roll around and I completely ditch my routine and gorge. Goodbye healthy body, hello fat pants.

Well, what do you weigh now? Today’s weigh-in, on a not so reliable scale, registered 213 pounds. I’ve got until the end of July in San Diego. Six months of focusing on nothing besides food and my body. Obsessive much? Believe me, I know. But it works.

The goal while I’m at home? To get to 165. That’s 48 pounds, which works out to an average of 8 pounds a month. The math makes the challenge seem a bit daunting, but I know that it’s possible. Why? The last time I was 213, I lost 36 pounds in 3 months.

What’s your ultimate weight goal? For my height of 5’6, a healthy weight range would be from 130-140, but I would be 100% satisfied with 150 pounds.

So bring it on, body fat. I’m going to beat you, once and for all.
