Day 45

by Jess on March 18th, 2010 in Month 1 & 2

Consumption: 1808 calories, 29.4g of fat. Total steps: 7,472

Had a weird day when it came to eating. And sleeping. If there was any day that my metabolism is messed up, it’s today. I didn’t sleep well last night (or much at all, in fact) and as a consequence, I wasn’t really hungry. I had a Fiber One bar to keep my body somewhat sane, but I didn’t eat my first real meal until late in the afternoon.

I decided to haul myself to the gym and try to crank out an 8:30 mile. Ran a good 5 miles at 7.0 pace (so roughly 8:31 mile) but then I got really tired. I walked for 15 minutes and went to lift. That’s when I started feeling light-headed. I’m thinking it’s due to low blood sugar, but I’m not sure. I thought it’d pass so I started doing some bicep curls but man, it just got worse. After the fourth exercise, I left. Couldn’t handle it any more. Had a shake when I got home, and thirty minutes later, felt MUCH better.

Stuffed my face with delicious angel hair pesto. I made it with spinach and asparagus, combined it with some pine nuts and ricotta, topped off with some bacon bits and grilled chicken breast. So good. And no oil involved! The pine nuts are pretty high in fat but it’s good fat and in moderation, so I’m not going to beat myself up over it. Will try to lower the fat intake tomorrow.

Workout: Treadmill. Biceps. Deltoids.

So I ran at 7.0 pace for 5 minutes (8:30 mile attempt). Did some bicep curls with the dumbbells and barbells as well as the deltoid flex machine. Couldn’t handle more due to lack of food.

Completed my squats challenge after dinner and felt pretty good. I’m not feeling any burn in the quads now but I’m still sweating after I finish the 5 sets. Talk about muscle and cardio workout all in one.

Day 44

by Jess on March 17th, 2010 in Month 1 & 2

Consumption: 1970 calories, 23.7g of fat. Total steps: 14,096

Data for March 16.

So today was my first day eating out in a long time. I think the last time was on Valentine’s Day (Chinese New Year!) so it’s been awhile. My dad and I took my grandma out to eat, and I ate a bit. How I deal with eating out, especially with family members? I eat something beforehand so I’m not starving and won’t wolf down everything in sight. I also start drinking massive amounts of liquids (tea was today’s drug of choice). And if I get pressured to eat something I don’t want to eat, I’ve learned to not have any problems telling somebody no. Trust me. My grandmother is pushy as all hell, but I’ve mastered the art of telling her nicely and lovingly that I’m just not hungry or I’m not going to eat it. Ultimately, eating something that you’ll feel guilty for eating later ends up hurting you, mentally and physically.

After some grocery shopping, we went to Coronado island near downtown San Diego for a walk. It was pretty hot out today but stunningly beautiful:

taken with my iPhone

What I learned today? The iPhone can capture some pretty sweet pictures. It’s got some great capabilities. I might consider shooting only with an iPhone for awhile (outside shots that is).

Lunch was a pita pocket stuffed with grilled onions, mushrooms and turkey meat with shredded lettuce, salsa and avocado. Pretty good. I was too hungry to grill an actual piece of chicken.

Dinner with shrimp and snow peas. Since I had a less healthy version for lunch, I wanted to see if I could make a similar type of dish but without oil. Turned out great! Success.

Workout: Treadmill. Chest. Lower back.

March goal accomplished today! Great feeling. Did a lot of chest work. I’ve graduated from flat bench press to inclined bench press and from dumbbell to a proper, full barbell bench press. Did a pyramid of 55 to 60 to 55 to 45 for bench press. At the 60, I almost couldn’t make it back up for the sixth rep. I think some of the guys were scared I was going to die during my first set because I saw some of them double check on me. Man. I need a spotter.

Did NOT get to my squats for the weekly challenge. Today was my rest day. In terms of Seth’s workout challenge, I failed too. Will try to make up the exercises tomorrow.
