The Birthday Dinner

by Jess on July 13th, 2010 in Foods

Even though my birthday was a week ago, I have neglected posting pictures of the wonderful dinner my mom prepared for me! It was scrumptious, and one of the best presents anyone could ask for.

My family isn’t big on presents. I typically get red envelope money and that’s about it. It’s not the gift-giving or money that matters. It’s the quality time with people who matter the most to me.

I haven’t celebrated my birthday with my family since 2005. I was always somewhere else (last year I was in Laos). I’ve realized how much I miss spending time with them. I’m getting a good dose of family time before I move out to DC next month.

And seriously.

Nothing beats Mom’s cooking.

THE SETUP

First Course: THE SALAD
lettuce, carrots, grape tomatoes, croutons, ranch dressing

Second Course: SASHIMI
salmon, tuna, yellowtail, scallops with freshly grated daikon radish

Third Course: VEGETABLE & SHRIMP TEMPURA STRIPS
grated carrots and zucchini with small dried shrimp fried in tempura batter

Fourth Course: SKEWERS
grilled shrimp, mushrooms and scallops

Dessert: FRUIT TART

The only thing that wasn’t homemade was the fruit tart. The dinner was easy to prepare and tasted delicious. I know. I am spoiled.

What would your ultimate birthday dinner consist of?

Great looking dinner. I love scalllops!

My favourite birthday dinner would involve all my fav’s: mom’s lasagna and swedish meatballs and taco’s……won’t happen though as I’d probably have a heart attack trying to eat it all :-)

SWEDISH MEATBALLS! They’re SO good. With the yellow herring sauce. Super addicting. I could eat at least 20 of them in one sitting.

That fish and skewer plate look so good. For my birthday, I always love a good fillet mignon or tuna steak :)

Come! Everyone is welcome :) My mom really likes making a lot of food. She’s good at feeding an army. No joke.

OM OMG OMGGGGGGGGG! That sashimi is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. And tempura strips? Are you kidding? Will your mommy make me MY birthday dinner? It’s coming up in August!! That looks incredible. AND: Happy Birthday!!!! WOW!

The tempura strips are SUPER easy. The fish was fresh from the fish market (it’s already skinned and everything) so all she did was slice it up. The daikon radish was grated with a pencil sharpener.

My favorite was the yellowtail and the scallop. Was SO good. Raw scallop is really tasty and refreshing. Ever try it?

P.S. I think you probably pretty much described my ultimate birthday dinner. Except I’d want a fruit topped vanilla bean cheesecake.

AHHH-MAAAZING! Glad you’re spending time with the fam before heading out to DC!! :-) I should be doing the same.

Soon enough, you’ll be spending time with ME in my kitchen when we both move out East together. Ha! I’ll roll you a MEAAAAAN sushi. Brown rice, and yes, I stick by day-old brown rice. I swear it’s what made my sushi so good. It’s the secret! ;)

    xo ALETHEIAAAAAAA

Oh yeah, that looks delicious! For some reason I’d love something horrible for me (like a Monte Cristo, Patty Melt, big Burger, or Papa Murphy’s Chicago Style Pizza…) But for Anna? Yeah, she’d love it!!!

From about ages 6-11 I chose steak (on the grill), peas and macaroni and cheese as my birthday dinner.

From ages 12-13, I chose steak (on the grill), peas, baked potatoes and macaroni and cheese as my birthday dinner.

From ages 14-19, I chose steak (on the grill), peas and baked potatoes as my birthday dinner.

Lemon pound cake was always my birthday cake.

I’d definitely get rid of the steak now since I’ve been a vegetarian for almost a decade! But I still love peas, macaroni and cheese, and baked potatoes, though now that I’m a grown-up and none of those is culinarily intricate, I enjoy them all quite regularly, so it wouldn’t be a special birthday meal. Now I’d probably choose an eggplant curry recipe that my mom gave me, and/or a cauliflower-penne dish my mother-in-law makes. For dessert, I still love lemon pound cake, but I’m also very happy with nut-free carrot cake or a sour cream cheesecake. And actually, pretty much any cake is good — love strawberry cake, white cake, raspberry cake, any cake really! But my husband usually takes me out for dinner on my birthday to wherever I want, so I now most years I pick something delish off a menu, but I’d love to go home again one year!

    Looks delish! :)

My birthday dinner would consist of nothing but homemade mac and cheese and chocolate cake. Nuff’ said. :)
