I decided to start logging my mile times separately from my workouts because I really want to see the progress I’ve made. The first week of February, I could barely run a mile. The second week was a mile of 12 minutes. Then last week, I made it to 10:40. And on February 24, I hit my 10 minute mile goal for the month. It was great!
Was it hard? Yes. Hard because I kept feeling like my legs were going to cave in and that my heart was going to explode and my lungs wouldn’t be able to handle it, but I made it. I kept telling myself, one more song, one more song. If you think about it like that, the time really goes faster. Ten minutes is roughly 3 songs. If you pick your three favorite songs and make a mile playlist from it, your mile will be over in no time.
It was such a great feeling to be running a 6.0 on the treadmill. I know there’s a program called Couch to 5K (C25K) which is geared towards helping people get into shape for running and it seems to work. I’m not following it but I do have 5K in my list of goals to accomplish. Hopefully by my birthday in July. I don’t think anyone is born a runner. Like any sport, some people are more talented because they’re naturally better equipped, but as with everything, training is involved. You train yourself, both physically and mentally, to endure the pressure. You train yourself to become stronger and faster. You train yourself to push through the hardest of times. I’m paralleling my running to my weight loss. If I can become a disciplined runner, I can become a disciplined weight loser and weight controller.
Now on to that 9 minute mile…
